Konnect Fastening Systems Receives Bolt Import Charter Certification

Around eight years ago, Konnect Fastening Systems embarked on a strategic review of the New Zealand market, aiming to identify gaps in quality supply across various market segments. The company recognized the potential in the Structural Steel market, especially in supplying to New Zealand's key fabricators, despite having a small market share initially. We were fortunate that our fastening division in Australia already commanded a good share of their market, so we were able to leverage their purchasing volumes to put together a very competitive offer in NZ.

Over the years, Konnect slowly built its profile in the market by increasing inventory holdings and expanding its product range to include Weld Studs and Hollo-Bolts. One significant achievement was securing an exclusive supply arrangement for distributing Class 10.9 EN14399-10 Greenkote Tension Control Bolts in New Zealand and Australia, sourced from TCB in the UK. In the wake of the Christchurch earthquakes design engineers were looking for higher-strength products to meet our demanding seismic requirements and the Greenkote TCBs represented an excellent solution as they were:

  • Quick and quiet to install
  • Environmentally friendly
  • Posed no risk of hydrogen embrittlement (which was a concern with Hot Dip Galvanised High Tensile 10.9 Assemblies)
  • Afforded quick and simple quality control of connections post-installation (tensioned correctly when the spline had sheared off)

After running a series of seminars with key structural engineering practices we began to see specifications for Class 10.9 EN14399-10 Greenkote TCBs in new “complex” structural projects.

With all Konnect Fastening Systems general Class 8.8 AS1252-2016 Structural Assemblies being sourced for many years from one single high-end manufacturer in China it was a natural progression for us to look to become accredited to SCNZ’s Bolt Importers Charter (BIC). After struggling to find a suitable accrediting body over Covid we were finally able to contract SGS New Zealand Ltd to independently audit our processes and we are now delighted to receive the certification from SCNZ.

The BIC, launched in 2020, plays a crucial role in ensuring quality assurance within the steel construction industry. Konnect's accreditation to the BIC reflects its dedication to best practices and adherence to high procurement standards. Under the charter, bolt importers like Konnect are required to operate a robust Quality Management System (QMS), independently audited to verify compliance with the scheme's standards. The BIC ensures that fasteners and anchor bolts supplied to the local steel construction sector adhere to high procurement standards.

While Konnect knows that our products are sourced at the highest level of quality, the BIC was important for us to provide an extra level of assurance to our customers. We look forward to continuing to support the New Zealand Steel Construction Industry with a wide range and excellent stock holdings of Structural Fastenings.
